Rushlights were the lighting source of choice from the Stone Age until well into the 19th century.
This rushlight holder is modelled after historical examples and forged by hand. The rushlight is simply clamped into the pincer part of the holder.A rushlight is a simple, early form of artificial light, essentially a miniature torch made from the dried pith of the soft rush plant, soaked in animal fat or oil, and used by the poor for centuries as an inexpensive alternative to candles. The pith is peeled from the green rush stalk, dried, and then repeatedly dipped in melted fat (like mutton or beef) or oil, building up layers, and lit at one or both ends
The model we offer here is combined with a candle cup and equipped with a tripod base.
