  • Swords and the Law | Merchant Venturers

Sword Legal in the UK? Currently, as the items we sell are replicas, you do not need to have a permit for these items. All products sold on our website are legal to buy and own in the UK if you are aged 18 years and over. Any swords bought must be held in your home, and are not allowed in public without a valid reason. You may carry a sword outside the home, for going to and from an engagement such as using the sword as a prop in a sport, re-enactment or stage combat/acting, as long as it is fully covered. Samurai and other curved blades were originally banned from sale in April 2008. An amendment of this act was passed months later in August 2008, allowing curved and Samurai swords, which are handmade using traditional forging methods before 1954, to be sold without a license. All the swords sold on our site are legal to own in the UK. Due to legislation passed in 1988, we do not sell the following products due to them being made illegal to import or sell in the UK: – Push Daggers – Butterfly Knives – Blowpipes – Sword Canes – Gravity Knives – Knuckle Dusters – Throwing Stars For a more detailed breakdown please refer to the OFFENSIVE WEAPONS ACT 2019. news.npcc.police.uk/releases/offensive-weapons-act-2019-bans-the-possess... Following a public consultation, in August 2023 the Government announced that it intends to legislate to introduce a range of new knife crime measures, including a ban on machetes and certain other large knives, a new police power to seize and destroy bladed articles, increased maximum penalties for offences relating to sale and supply, and a new offence of possession of a bladed article with the intention to endanger life or cause fear of violence. The Government has now introduced these measures in the Criminal Justice Bill 2023-24, which is currently in committee stage in the Commons. Sections 2.3 and 3.2 of the Library’s briefing on the Bill provide further details. www.gov.uk/buying-carrying-knives The Law UK Law forbids the sale of weapons of alcohol to persons under the age of 18. As such we are unable to sell either of these items to those people lucky enough to be under the age of 18. It is NOT illegal for somebody under the age of 18 to own a weapon, just illegal for us to sell them one. Parents or generous relations are welcome to purchase these items for persons under the age of 18 but we do remind you that these items can maim or kill so caution is advised. So what is a “weapon”? Any item on our site that can cause injury or death is classed as a weapon. Yes, we know that you cause injury with a plastic or wooden sword etc. In general anything made of steel and pointy, sharp or designed to club people will be restricted to sale to people over the age of 18 only. Projectile weapons such as crossbows are also restricted in the same way. We age check all our customers by verifying they are at least 18 years old. With regards to our sharp or sharpened items we must, by law, request proof of age and address in the form of a passport or driving license.

  • About Horn and Bone | Merchant Venturers

Horn and Bone We make use of a variety of natural materials to bring you our extensive collection of items and Historical Reproductions. Our raw supplies are sourced ethically from renewable resources, often recycling a ’waste’ product from the meat industry and as a result preventing it from ending up in landfill. The majority of our finished products are biodegradable and/or recyclable, making a truly ecological product. HORN Our domestic cattle, here in the UK, have been selectively bred so they no longer grow horns, this has been done to prevent the cattle from harming one another and consequently damaging the product they are reared for e.g. hide or meat. We therefore use horn from Ankole Cattle sourced as a by-product of the meat industry in Nigeria. With more space to roam their horns are left to grow, producing the very large, distinctive horns with both great length and circumference that are ideal for use in horn working. Horns are the pointed projections, from the forehead of animals such as bison, sheep, goats and cattle, they start to grow soon after birth and continue to grow throughout the life of the animal. Unlike members of the deer family both the male and the female have horns. Horn consists of two distinct parts: a short inner core of living bone and an outer covering of horn. This outer covering is made of keratin (the same material as our nails and hair) and is more or less hollow except for the very tip. Cow horn has thermoplastic properties, which means it can be softened and made malleable by heating. It can then be bent, shaped and moulded into various contours to create the wonderful horn products in our range. Un-worked cattle horn has a rough dull surface, however after sanding and polishing the horn takes on a smooth glossy appearance, it is only at this stage that it’s true colours appear. While cattle horn can be nearly any colour, it is generally a light creamy colour, sometimes streaked with white, brown or black patches; take a look at a few of our images to see the range of colours that can be found. NB. No two pieces will ever be the same and the colours you receive will vary from those pictured. BONE We use the shinbone of domestic cattle sourced as a by-product of the Chinese meat industry. The bone is already cleaned, bleached and processed before we purchase it. Bones are the rigid organs that form part of the skeleton of all vertebrates and are composed mainly of Calcium Carbonate. They serve to move, support, and protect the various organs of the body. Bone is not a uniformly solid material, but has a honeycombed internal structure, this gives it it’s rigidity making it lightweight, yet strong and hard. The hard outer layer of the bone is composed of compact bone tissue, also referred to as dense bone, so-called due to its minimal gaps and spaces. Only the very densest shinbone is used which has the thickest hard outer layer. Bone looks similar to ivory but it is lighter in weight and usually not as white. A polished bone surface usually has small pits and what appears to be a lightly scratched surface; these are the exposed "tunnels" that permeate the bone. The soft flowing lines and smooth milky white appearance of a bone spoon is only the start, it is soft and warm to the touch and is more resilient and durable than horn. Over a period of time bone absorbs oils from your skin and changes colour to a very light honey gold. BUFFALO HORN Water Buffalo horns come mostly from India and Thailand. These horns are from the Asian buffalo, bred for domestic purposes and are widely used because the animal is not a protected species unlike its African counterpart. Buffalo horn is made up of dense layers of fibres that have a very hard and durable surface, it resembles Cattle Horn greatly in its structure, however the walls are much thicker and more of the tip is solid. Buffalo horn is nearly always entirely black and quite heavily ridged along the inner side curve; it is flatter and far more rectangular than cow horn. When given a high polish buffalo horn develops an extremely hard surface and has to be one of the toughest natural materials. FIX THE PLANET We make use of a variety of natural materials to bring you our extensive collection of items. • About Handblown Glass | Merchant Venturers

Handblown Glass Our historical glasses are replicas of glass from the 2000-year history of glass blowing. All our glasses are entirely handmade. They are mouth blown and driven with timed-cut clippings, glass threads and other decor. A sign of a handmade glass is the so-called punt mark on the underside of the glass called a Pontil mark or punt mark; the scar where the pontil, punty or punt was broken from a work of blown glass. The presence of such a scar indicates that a glass bottle or bowl was blown freehand, while the absence of a punt mark suggests either that the mark has been obliterated or that the work was mold-blown. The soft rounded edge of the top of the glass and some variation in size, thickness and details are other signs of genuine craftsmanship. The glass mass is specially designed to resemble old-time glass. Certain chemicals, mainly metal oxides, have been added to get the correct color scale. The glass mass contains, in different extent, small air bubbles and shifts in structure. Each glass is unique. All these special features of historical glass mean that there can not be two identical glasses. This makes each glass a unique handmade masterpiece - just like the original glass. The green glass, forest glass is crafted using traditional methods that have been handed down from one generation to the next in Bohemia (Czech Republic) since the 14th century. Of course, this means that it is hand blown on furnaces demanding great skill. The presence of tiny bubbles in this glass, as well as its pleasant green coloration make it unique and characteristic. Please note that these are handmade for you, not only does this mean every item is slightly different, it also requires patience. We have a few styles in stock, but most are made as you order. For cold drinks only.
