Immerse yourself in the world of the Middle Ages with the “Writhen Hilt” sword. This finely crafted late medieval longsword impresses with its intricate design and offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio. It makes an ideal gift for medieval enthusiasts, sword collectors, or a perfect addition to your medieval garb.

This beautiful bastard sword is a detailed and high-quality replica of the famous “Writhen-Hilt” sword, which dates back to around 1480 and is presumably of German origin. It owes its name “writhen”, meaning “twisted” or “contorted”, to its unique hilt shape. The original sword was once owned by the art collectors Frederic Spitzer and William Randolph Hearst before being acquired by the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, UK in 1952.

This reconstruction features an approx. 88.5 cm long, double edged blade that tapers towards the tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened. The blade has a pronounced medial ridge running down the centre of the blade, typical of swords from the Oakeshott XVIII type. The historical original bears inscriptions in the form of a crowned orb on both sides, the meaning of which remains unidentified. However, it is believed to be the maker’s mark. In reference to this, this replica is engraved on one side of the blade. The pommel and crossguard are made of brass to closely resemble the original, where these elements were crafted from gilded bronze. The grip is made of wood and is adorned with two decorative brass rings, one in the centre and another just below the crossguard. The pommel, quillons and the grip are all artistically carved and shaped to resemble a gnarled stave of three entwined branches, which splay out at the ends.

The one-and-a-half-handed sword comes with a brown wood/leather scabbard with a brass throat and chape with gothic decorations. This medieval sword is designed as a collectors or decoration/display piece and, besides its quality as a collectible, is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
