G423 Blue Spiral Pass Glass

Blue Spiral Pass Glass.

Original found in the Netherlands or Germany. Ca 40 cl.

A clear, yellowish-green glass with a very unusual shape: a cylindrical base rising to an octagonal rim. It is decorated with milled blue glass thread, wound about ten times around the glass. The rings that are formed by this decorative motif are known as 'passes': in fact the vessel is known as a passglass. Based on a passglass made in Germany or the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. It is one of the few surviving examples, although many were made in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In fact their long, thin shape made these glasses especially delicate. In the course of time countless passglasses have been broken. This is based on one of the rare remaining examples.
